The Environmental Cleanup Engineer position represents the agency and reviews and approves final engineering designs and decisions. This position located in the Northwest Region of the Toxics Cleanup Program serves as an environmental cleanup engineer for the section. As such, provides environmental and construction expertise on the cleanup of complex sites, including, but not limited to, uplands area-wide sites. This position also conducts contractor oversight, reviews investigations, and proposes solutions to complex environmental engineering problems on a site-by-site basis that require the application of environmental engineering techniques and principles related to cleanup alternatives for cleanup of contaminated sites.

Duties
Accidental spills of dangerous materials and past business practices have contaminated land and water throughout the state. The (TCP) works to remedy these situations, which range from cleaning up contamination from leaking underground storage tanks, to remediating large, complex projects requiring substantial engineering solutions. Our mission is to get and keep contaminants out of the environment.
We are looking for a person who possesses excellent people skills, are flexible and organized and has the ability to communicate with a diverse audience, a good listener who asks questions and is a problem solver that works well in a team. They will communicate with the public, generating and reviewing cleanup plans for properties, managing data quality control and communicate the information to the public. They will also manage contractors and consultants on public works contracts completing the administrative duties associated with that.
The Environmental Cleanup Engineer is expected to work with the team to complete cleanup in the Everett Smelter cleanup site. Typical problems include access issues for cleanup, knowledge and information gaps of the public, public non-responsiveness and anger, and language differences.
The Environmental Cleanup Engineer will be working with a highly effective, supportive team cleaning up a large contaminated site to protect the people and the environment of Washington state for the future. They will gain experience working with the public, local governments and agencies. Flexibility is essential because they will periodically need to attend evening public meetings or festivals on the weekend.
The Everett Smelter team is small but efficient. Each member has their focus area and supports the others to create a balance to effectively complete the cleanup work. They are great to work with.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree with major study in one of the following engineering fields; sanitary, water resources, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related field
AND
Registration as a professional engineer in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington and two (2) years of experience in environmental engineering.
OR
An Engineer in Training Certificate or a Bachelor's degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields; sanitary, water resources, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related field
AND
Registration as a professional engineer in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington and three (3) years of experience in environmental engineering.
NOTE: A PhD in one of the above engineering fields will substitute for two (2) years of the environmental engineering experience.
NOTE: Requirements for professional registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams. Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.
Initial 40-hour hazardous materials training followed by annual 8-hour refresher training - this doesn't have to be done prior to starting. If the finalist doesn't have this training then we will send them to obtain the training after hire.
