Come join the fast-growing Building Engineering Services (BES) Business Group at HDR. BES provides mechanical, electrical, plumbing, site civil, structural, and specialty design services for a wide variety of building projects that include public, municipal, private, and Federal project types both locally as well as across the region and globally. This multidisciplinary team consists of: civil engineers who focus on site layout and grading; structural engineers with emphasis on building support systems (concrete, steel, mass timber, etc.); mechanical engineers concentrating on both wet (piping/plumbing design) and dry (HVAC) building systems and electrical engineers and instrumentation and controls engineers directing design on high, medium and low voltage systems (power distribution, lighting, communication and systems). You have an opportunity to work on a wide variety of building types ranging from technology, aerospace, commercial, industrial and institutional facilities to data centers and highly specialized facilities in the water, wastewater and power delivery sectors.

Primary Responsibilities


HDR is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to lead and support our BES team located in Bellevue, Washington. The Senior Civil Engineer should be people oriented, operations-focused and service-oriented.

In the role of Senior Civil Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Lead the design and production of plans and reports for general civil on wide variety of projects, including site layouts, horizontal and vertical control, grading and drainage, paving, site utilities, and associated civil engineering activities.
  • Perform quantity calculations.
  • Prepare specifications and contract documents.
  • Support permitting processes.
  • Perform complex assignments exercising judgment in evaluation, selection and modification or standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in an area of specialization that resolves problems of greater scope and complexity as needed.
  • Plan, organize and supervise work of project team staff of professionals and technicians as needed.
  • Direct and coordinate work of single or multidiscipline teams throughout the project's lifecycle (from project initiation/award to close-out)
  • Establish and maintain client relations, and be involved with marketing, contractual, design and production meetings.
  • Participate in project pursuits as needed.
  • Conduct schematic, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals, and other disciplines
  • Coordinate staffing and workload through entire project life cycle,and ensure completion of deliverables on schedule.
  • Track financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust work effort with team to ensure that work is completed within parameters of agreed-to budget and schedule.
  • Implement QA/QC procedures.
  • Maintain professional engineering registration.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 10+ years design experience managing various civil/site design projects
  • PE
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D is critical
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, MicroStation, InRoads and other civil engineering software as appropriate
  • Project Engineering and Project Management experience
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • May also provide project leadership or management for due diligence and site development projects, as well as support for facility projects with other HDR business groups, including Architecture, Water, Resources and Transportation.
  • Must have the ability to interact with various design teams, have excellent organizational, project management and communication (both written and verbal) skills

The expected compensation range for this position is $116,403 - $166,290 annually depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
