The Data Science Lab focuses on democratizing education and resource awareness for data science and computational biology, with the ultimate goal of empowering more people to successfully use data science. This position will focus on the development of software packages to aid in informatics education. Large informatics educational initiatives funded by multi-year grants include:
- The itcrtraining.org initiatives, which bridge the gap between cancer informatics tool developers and their users,
- The AnVIL Project (anvilproject.org), a cloud-based genomics platform and alternative to traditional data storage and computing on institutional servers,
- Data Science for Environmental Health (DaSEH): a program aiming to build data science skills among practitioners in public and environmental health disciplines.
Specifically, this role will include further development and maintenance of open source software such as https://www.ottrproject.org/ and https://github.com/fhdsl/metricminer . The ideal candidate will have good team communication skills and a strong motivation for creating well-documented and usable software products. This position will require self-motivation, an interest in scientific programming, coding, and working with a team. The Data Science Lab has broad expertise in computational biology, data science, programming, biology, statistics, and education. The lab provides a vibrant research environment for career advancement toward top-tier academic or industry positions.
This position will include the following responsibilities:
- Follow software development best practices to design and develop software features to meet end user specifications.
- Design, build, and maintain software packages for use by the scientific community.
- Publish R or Python packages on online open source repositories (such as CRAN).
- Work collaboratively on multiple projects as a technical resource to define, develop, and manage data solutions that support the requirements and objectives of the project, apply automation, and provide feedback on technical solutions and options.
- At times assisting with workshop and curriculum creation related to scientific software or data analysis.
- A PhD in biostatistics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, or another statistical, computational discipline, ecology or related scientific field
- Extensive experience with either R or Python and willingness to use either.
- Experience with scientific programming.
- Demonstrated prior experience with the development and maintenance of open source software.
- Demonstrated experience with:
- Version control
- GitHub
- R or Python package development
- Experience with Docker image management is strongly desired, but not essential.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $67,728 to $100,000 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
This position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
