Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime eligible, project position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College and within Washington State Department of Corrections in facilities in Washington. This project position is funded through a legislative proviso and other resources through June 30, 2026, with continuation dependent of additional funding.
Position Purpose
This position manages program operation, education, training, tracking, and reporting for Sustainability in Prisons Project's (SPP) Turtle, Butterfly, and Avian Acoustic Monitoring Ecological Conservation programs at Cedar Creek and Mission Creek Corrections Centers. The incumbent supervises Conservation Program Coordinators and manages program partnerships. The position is also responsible for reviewing and updating SPP's operations systems, protocols, and trainings to improve resources for SPP and to adapt select materials for use by the broader, Evergreen Prison Education Program Network (EPEP).

EPEP: Our mission is to expand access to an Evergreen education and holistic support services for currently incarcerated and legally liberated people.

The position collaborates with an engaged community of incarcerated people, scientists, researchers, technicians, corrections professionals, program coordinators, faculty, staff, and students to provide impactful education and training and resolve complex program management issues. The incumbent demonstrates high value for equity and inclusion, empowering change, working across differences to increase access to education, and ability to consistently extend respect and compassion to all partners and interested parties.
Nature and Scope
This position reports to the Co-Director, Sustainability in Prisons Project and Evergreen Prison Education Project Network. The position ensures effective operation of SPP Ecological Conservation programs and development of SPP and EPEP training resources. The incumbent contributes to a healthy, respectful, caring, and professional work environment. The position directly supervises three half-time student staff and may supervise non-permanent staff and/or volunteers for specific projects.

This work includes exposure to potentially difficult information, people struggling with health and other life circumstances, and sometimes challenging work environments. We aim to support the incumbent in processing difficult aspects of the work in healthy and productive ways, including support from supervisors, team members, and community and by engaging in training, group-care, and other practices which support wellbeing. Essential Functions
SPP Ecological Conservation Program Management (~50%)
  • Manage collaborations between Washington Corrections staff, SPP-Evergreen staff (professional, temporary, student, and contract staff), conservation organizations, and other partners to develop, maintain, and enhance educational opportunities for incarcerated people in SPP's conservation programs including Turtle Rehabilitation, Butterfly Captive Rearing, Avian Acoustic Monitoring, and other new and established conservation programs, as resources allow.
  • Supervise three, half-time student program coordinator positions, including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating performance, and supporting effective program operation; conduct weekly meetings with employees to prioritize tasks, set goals, discuss progress, receive input, and problem solve; depending on funding, program priorities, and capacity, may supervise student interns or volunteer positions.
  • Manage planning, developing, reviewing, and updating new and established conservation program protocols, education plans, and portfolios.
  • Manage conservation program logistics, such as equipment and supplies ordering, inventory, file organization, developing agendas, and facilitating meetings.
  • Manage collaborations with others to effectively address and resolve program and/or partnership challenges; develop and maintain processes for receiving program feedback and adjusting program operations based on partner input, including incarcerated people, corrections staff, students, conservation organizations, and others.
  • Approve conservation program expenditures, track expenses in systems established by SPP, make purchases, and draft expense estimates.
  • Document decisions, strategies, and actions for effective program management.
  • Support ecological conservation programs by serving as the back-up staff when the Program Coordinator is unavailable and/or additional staff are needed for programs, including butterfly, turtle, avian acoustic monitoring, conservation nursery, beekeeping, gardening, and other.
  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends in response to living organism and partner needs.

EPEP Operations Resources and Training (~35%)
  • Foster positive relationships with all SPP partners and EPEP Network members, including Liberation Scholars, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth, and Evergreen Inside, as well as incarcerated people, Washington Corrections, Evergreen State College, agency, and non-profit staff and leadership.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with potential new partner organizations, individuals, and experts to develop and/or improve existing operations and training resources.
  • Contribute to effective teamwork and pursue excellence for the SPP and EPEP teams.
  • Manage SPP and EPEP protocol and training resources; make updates as requested by SPP and EPEP staff.
  • Lead, develop, and deliver select EPEP Network new hire and team trainings.
  • Adapt SPP protocols, procedures, reporting, and training resources for widespread use by the EPEP Network.
  • Work with SPP, EPEP, and other college office staff to identify, document, and improve operations resources and processes.
  • Support SPP and EPEP training and team building activities; assistance may include leading response to requests for development, coordination, and/or facilitation.
  • Track SPP and EPEP staff operations training and curate operations training resources in shared files.
  • Steward and update SPP and EPEP contacts in central location.

Tracking and Reporting (~15%)
  • Manage ecological conservation program tracking and reporting, develop and update systems to synthesize ecological conservation program results, and ensure that reporting and tracking information is available and accessible to the SPP team.
  • Respond to requests for ecological conservation program updates and present program outcomes in multiple venues (e.g., annual report, contract reports, SPP website, conferences, publications, planning sessions, etc.).
  • Contribute to EPEP reports, including summaries of training, team building, and operations resources developed to support the EPEP team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in environmental studies/science, social science, education, or related field.
  • Experience working with corrections staff and/or incarcerated individuals.
  • Advanced training, education, or experience in equity and inclusion topics.
  • Direct or indirect experience with systems of incarceration.
  • Experience developing, delivering, or managing training, environmental, sustainability, or other education programs.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080.   • Must possess a valid driver's license and be in compliance with the college's eligible driver requirements.
