Position Title Faculty Member or Professor of the practice in Computer Science (Cybersecurity), Part-time, 2024-2025 Academic Year (Adjunct)
Job Summary
This is a part-time faculty position in the school of Professional and Continuing Education at The Evergreen State College.

The Evergreen State College seeks broadly trained adjunct faculty members or "professors of the practice" eager to develop and teach Computer Science curriculum as part of a Cybersecurity certificate program.

We are particularly interested in candidates who are enthusiastic about exploring the unique possibilities that computer science and computational approaches offer toward problem solving and critical thinking.

We are eager to increase our capacity to create inclusive classrooms that support diverse learners in computational thinking and computer science.

Candidates for this position will be considered for teaching one or more of the following courses in a new undergraduate Cybersecurity certificate program. The course opportunities are as follows:
  1. Introduction to Cybersecurity (Fall 2024): This class will provide students a foundation in cybersecurity by exploring critical topics in the field. The full course description is available here: https://www.evergreen.edu/catalog/offering/introduction-to-cybersecurity-42369
  2. Applications Security: In this class, students will learn the basics of applications security and delve into the various attacks currently used by cybercriminals. The full course description is available here: https://www.evergreen.edu/catalog/offering/applications-security-38127
  3. Network Security: This class will focus on issues that are most related to how computers can store and communicate data securely. Students will learn securing network protocols by applying concepts from cryptography, such as symmetric key and public key ciphers, secure hashes, key distribution, authentication, and digital signatures.   4. Security Policies and Procedures: This class will explore the role of information in private and public organizations. Students will learn to develop information security policies and procedures to protect against vulnerabilities in cybersecurity infrastructure. Each offering represents 4-credit (quarter time) part-time adjunct faculty teaching. Classes are hybrid (remote and synchronous online). It is preferred that candidates be able to occasionally meet with students in person, but it is not required.

Job Expectations
This is an adjunct faculty position and is not eligible for continuing appointment. All requirements for these positions must be completed at the time of hire. Salary for all positions is based on experience and degrees (see http://www.evergreen.edu/facultyhiring/salarygrid for more information). We do not offer relocation expenses for our adjunct faculty positions.

The Evergreen State College school of Professional and Continuing Education offers full-time programs during the day and courses, half-time programs, and certificates during evening hours and on weekends.

Evergreen uses narrative evaluations in lieu of grades and faculty are generally responsible for evaluating 25 students/quarter in each class. Faculty are also responsible for advising students as they reflect on their learning process, develop a pathway of study, and formulate their own areas of concentration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.A./B.S. with 5 years of professional experience OR a Master's in a related field
  • Success or potential for supporting student learning in Computer Science

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master's or Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field
  • College level teaching experience
  • Experience designing, teaching, and assessing computer science education in an academic or professional training context.
  • Certification or other demonstrated education and experience in cybersecurity
  • Experience supporting students' development of writing and other communication skills
  • Experience/familiarity with or awareness of accessibility and/or inclusive/universal design in the area of computing technologies

Conditions of Employment
* As a condition of employment, persons hired must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of beginning work.

* Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
