General/Position Summary

The Senior Medical Affairs Director, Hematology will be a recognized expert in the field, providing medical and scientific leadership in the Medical Affairs function for our Hematology therapeutic area. This role will report to the Executive Medical Director and will work with a cross-functional group to both align scientific and medical strategies with broader corporate and key stakeholder needs and ensure the flawless execution of US Hematology medical plans.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all scientific data is interpreted critically by the Medical team and will work with the Executive Director to determine the potential impact of new research on scientific and medical understanding of assigned products
  • Shares country/regional insights with global teams to ensure global medical strategies and activities reflect the needs of the country/region
  • Provides fair and balanced medical information and education to health care professionals and payers that support the safe and effective use of Vertex drugs in the appropriate patients
  • Resolves complex problems with wide-reaching implications to the organization performance. Communicates highly complex ideas in an understandable manner and effectively interacts with senior leader applying advanced negotiation skills as required
  • Fosters patient access to Vertex drugs, by supporting the commercial organization in the preparation/review of reimbursement dossiers and presenting scientific data as required to key stakeholders in the access process.
  • Performs/oversees medical/scientific training for field medical teams, commercial, and other internal stakeholders
  • Supervises the medical directors and contributes to the local Brand Team, representing the TA (scientific and medical expertise) and ensuring all activities address patient well-being and respect data integrity
  • Ensures compliance at country level with company policies, medical affairs SOPs, GCP and ICH
  • Assesses local promotional materials and ensures that all claims are fully supported by scientific data, and are presented in an accurate, fair and balanced manner

Required Knowledge/Skills

  • Experience in Medical Affairs within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry; experience in benign hematology preferred
  • Ability to work across a complex matrix organization and influence at all levels
  • Maintains a high level of expertise and judgment in relation to both technical and ethical aspects of a medical director role and responsibilities
  • Ability to both anticipate issues and be flexible and reactive to situations
  • Knowledge of regulatory and payer environments
  • Experience in scientific interactions with payer bodies
  • Track-record of ability to plan, initiate and complete projects within allotted time frames & delivering high quality successful results
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team on common projects and goals, at national and regional level
  • Capacity to critically analyze current scientific literature
  • Good understanding of the basics of health economics and patient outcomes
  • Skilled in effective presentations of clinical/scientific data in a group or individual setting, internally and externally
  • Competence in the use of IT tools and standard software programs, including the conduct of Web-based meetings
  • English language fluent, written and spoken

Required Experience:

  • Typically requires 8 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Education:

  • Terminal scientific degree (e.g., PhD or PharmD)
